Walking in space, We find the purpose of peace : Hair production shots

I don't get to photograph many shows these days, but i'm very glad that I got to photograph Hair.
This cast bring their A-game every performance.

Hair is currently playing at The Vaults, Waterloo.

review : 2014

So I thought I'd put together a few of my favourite images of the year, they probably won't be in chronological order. I pretty much only know that the year started with the london jam & improvathon, from there I'll just wing it.

As someone who doesn't do this all the time, who can't chase all the photos I want to take, who really doesn't have much time attached to a camera, it's always a great honour to be asked to take someone's photo. Whether it be a friends' wedding (I don't do weddings!), a little person's christening or a theatre show, it's a huge responsibility to get it right and i'm always very happy when people entrust me with that responsibility, because quite frankly this is the thing that keeps me sane.

When I get the photographers equivalent of itchy feet I'm stupidly lucky to have a few friends who will jump in front of the camera for me and let me indulge my whims.

As such I treasure every image in this post, they make me very happy. Hope they're even a tiny bit interesting to look at...... Oh and I'm just going to put each image up in full so just go ahead and scroll....

An angel of the first degree...

Gary is the 4th of the Rent @ Greenwich cast who I've photographed for a 2nd time since the show (he played Angel, one of the best Angels I've had the pleasure to witness). I've been wanting to photograph Gary again for the last 2 years and we finally got around to it a couple of weeks back on a rare sunday off.

With help from the brilliant make-up skills of Jamie Birkett and a large bag of silver ticker tape, we made some sparkly, shiny rockstar images.

These are a few of my favourites.....

I love how the light catches the sparkles, and makes Gary's skin all shiny.

Then we made this, which I love....

Fairy-lights, bunting, crochet & tears - 'Beans on Toast' production shots

....so ok, the tears were mostly from me, but maybe from a lot of the other audience members also. I burst into tears at the finale, too much emotion. Such a beautiful show, I'm just going to post all the pics, I loved photographing these guys.

Scott loves Jen. Jen loves Scott. Jen is gone. Warm, funny and touching memory play by lamp-light; fragmented memories and live folk music. Created and performed by this year's graduates of Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, this beautiful new musical play asks whether we should let go of what we have lost, or cling on to the memory if it brings us happiness.

'Beans on Toast' is directed by Alex Howarth & produced by Patch of Blue.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape - Promo shots

This term at Mountview a group of students from the acting course are performing the world premiere of an adaptation of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" by Peter Hedges. Their director, Alex Howarth, asked me to create some promo images for them, so last weekend we found ourselves in the back room of the brilliant Earl Haig Hall in Crouch End with orange flashes and fairy lights.

I can't wait to see the final production next week, I think it's going to be a bit brilliant.

In The Heights : Southwark Playhouse

For the last few days I've been trying to put into words how magnificent this show is... words fail me often in these occasions, I hope these images come closer to explaining it.

Long story short... if you can get a ticket, and they're few and far between after the slew of amazing reviews, you must see this show.

In The Heights stars Nathan Amzi, Victoria Hamilton Barritt, David Bedella, Josie Benson, Courtney-Mae Briggs, Damian Buhagiar, Raffaella Covino, Gabriela Garcia, Reiss Hinds, Emma Kingston, Jonny Labey, Dex Lee, Sam Mackay, Christina Modestou, Sarah Naudi, Eve Polycarpou & Wayne Robinson. It is directed by Luke Sheppard & choreographed by Drew Mconie. Check out the Southwark Playhouse website for all info and ticket details.

Happy Birthday Mr Shakespeare...

The gentlemen of the School of Night quite regularly blow my mind, the words come falling out of their mouths and their brains at a rate I can hardly follow. They create worlds which a simultaneously brand new and steeped in tradition. Yesterday, for the 2nd year in a row, I witnessed them performing at the Globe as part of the Shakespeare's birthday celebrations. I love photographing at the Globe, it's so colourful and full of life, plus it's daylight.

As I was out for the day and this performance was all of 20mins long, I decided to break from the norm and not carry a stack of kit with me. As such these are all shot on the tiny new fuji xa1 - a camera that seems well beyond it's tag of an entry level mirrorless camera. I just love using it and it doesn't get in anyone's way.

Happy Birthday to the bard. :-)

New year : New website : New ideas

So, my last website wasn't doing everything I wanted it to, so I changed it. To be honest that comment could be levelled at my photography recently, it doesn't feel like I'm thinking enough. So we start afresh, luckily the year started well with an insane week of improv theatre to photograph at the end of January and it made me look more carefully.

I thought I should blog just a few of the images from that week, as a start to the new blog. I've also decided to blog slightly differently, just click the thumbnails to see the full shot....
