I don't do sadness - Spring Awakening production shots.

Photographing this cast has reminded me how many wonderful elements there are to this show... It's a treat to watch people of the right age play these roles, and a cast as good as this doesn't hold back. Alex Howarth's wonderfully inventive direction, combined with the design talents of Ben M Rogers (set & lighting) and Anna Saunders (costume), has created a fabulous show....

'Cuz you know I don't do sadness,
Not even a little bit.
Just don't need it in my life.
Don't want any part of it.
I don't do sadness.
Hey, I've done my time
Lookin' back on it all.
Man, it blows my mind.
I don't do sadness,
So been there.
Don't do sadness,
Just don't care.

Society of Strange...

....I'd like to explain the Society of Strange, but that would be difficult. It's probably safe to say that these are some of the cleverest people I know, and I don't really understand some of what they say!!

Check out their website and be amazed...

We made these images before and during their show at Theatre 503 a fortnight ago...

...and my favourite shot in quite a long while. The Society of Strange are Adam, Alex & Andrew....

'cause everything is beautiful at the ballet - class with the R&J team

Behind the scenes of Romeo & Juliet at the Peacock Theatre.

These are welcoming, smiley, super-talented people and it was such a treat to be allowed to photograph one of their daily classes, an hour full of laughter and lots of leaping.
It was kind of dark to begin with and then dealing with major lens flare (yes I know I normally actively seek them out!) once the big lights were put on, but this wasn't about lighting or polished performance photos, it was all about people and finding shapes wherever they presented themselves. It was loads of fun just being ignored as I wandered around with my camera and they got on with their day.

As you can see I got a bit obsessed with anonymous feet and people stretching, and then when class was finished Preston & Ryan (romeo & tybalt!) did some crazy leaps for the camera, just for fun, helping me out with the hardest thing to photograph.

Thanks again to the Romeo & Juliet cast for letting me into your world. x

"My old man said follow the van..." - Carradine's Cockney Singalong @ The Classic Car Boot Fair.

Ok, so it was drizzly wet and a bit bloody cold, but very pretty and lots of fun.

Carradine's Cockney Singalong, the mobile division, brought to you by Mr Tom Carradine, Mr Champagne Charlie, a blue tarpaulin, helpful brolly holders, the first aid tent when the rain got too much for the piano, mexican beans, kedgeree and a shiny brass megaphone.

Check out the website at carradinescockneysingalong.co.uk for dates of more events and come along for a singalong, it's good for the soul and some are even indoors!

My junk is you : Spring Awakening promo shots

Renegade Theatre is an exciting youth theatre group who will be performing the fabulous show that is Spring Awakening at Duke St Theatre in High Wycombe from 1st to 4th of April. It will be a treat to see this show again and I'm really looking forward to seeing this talented young cast bring these roles to life. It was a joy to be asked by their director Alex Howarth to make some images for them.

I must admit that I had a very different plan for these images until I got to Duke St, I was intending something more traditionally Spring Awakening, the designer/producers had another idea as well. We'd swapped many reference images....

.... Then I saw the huge wooden panel that they have in the bar space, and the bare bulbs on long cables, and the huge wooden ladder.... Oh and the over-sized armchair. None of which were going to be in the images that were in my head!!

But combined with the beautiful costumes designed by Anna Saunders and made by Julia Saunders, these were the images we "had" to make!!

Working with this young cast was really fabulous, they were creative, inspired and excited about this show they're working on together.

I'm really proud of these images we made together, perfectly Spring Awakening whilst not looking like "Spring Awakening", much as I suspect Alex's direction will be!

But soft, what light through yonder window breaks : Romeo & Juliet production shots

This is Rasta Thomas' "Romeo and Juliet" which is running at the Peacock Theatre in Holborn from now until Sunday 29th March.

After watching the 3 numbers which were performed to make these images, I know I need to go back and see the whole show. Romeo & Juliet is, and will always be, one of my favourite stories whether it be ballet or film or modern or traditional. The emotions these guys evoke are just beautiful to watch.. Preston Swovelin and Adrienne Canterna are a stunning pair as the title characters, their dancing as a couple is tender and romantic but at the same time filled with emotion and the youthful passion of first love. Some of the photos almost too intimate to post.

The  supporting cast are strong and flamboyant, with Ryan Carlson as Tybalt storming round the stage bare-chested and covered in tattoos, bristling with anger and power.

These are fabulous, exciting performers and I feel lucky to have witnessed them whilst attached to my camera!! :-)

Go see this show.

West End Has Faith : Christmas concert

One Sunday evening, at the end of last year, some very fine performers gathered in the simply stunning venue of St Sepulchre's Church in the city. A beautiful celebration of Christmas in aid of Tearfund.

Here's just a few shots from the evening....

With hindsight….

....I could start this blog post with something terribly zen like "it takes time away from something to make you realise what it needs"..... but this is purely a blog about editing/post-production and not about life, the universe and everything!!

Nearly a year ago, Ed and I made some end-of-winter-nearly-spring type images on the canal from Camden to Paddington. We were both pretty happy with them, they were different to previous shots we'd made and were a nice diversion...

.... but I had cause to go back and dig them out last night. Looking again (and because I had to create some new jpegs) I decided to start from scratch with the edit.... I pulled the RAWs back in and began again.

And so we have something totally different. My brain obviously went to another place this time last year, because (in my opinion) the new version is so much better.  Same file, same software, same me, "different" eyes!!

It was a good day though, we finished up with these and then headed to the Troubador in Earls Court to see the fabulous Bluejays band play until running for the last tube home. 😀

review : 2014

So I thought I'd put together a few of my favourite images of the year, they probably won't be in chronological order. I pretty much only know that the year started with the london jam & improvathon, from there I'll just wing it.

As someone who doesn't do this all the time, who can't chase all the photos I want to take, who really doesn't have much time attached to a camera, it's always a great honour to be asked to take someone's photo. Whether it be a friends' wedding (I don't do weddings!), a little person's christening or a theatre show, it's a huge responsibility to get it right and i'm always very happy when people entrust me with that responsibility, because quite frankly this is the thing that keeps me sane.

When I get the photographers equivalent of itchy feet I'm stupidly lucky to have a few friends who will jump in front of the camera for me and let me indulge my whims.

As such I treasure every image in this post, they make me very happy. Hope they're even a tiny bit interesting to look at...... Oh and I'm just going to put each image up in full so just go ahead and scroll....

The amazing light made up for the cold....

Archive : Darren

Just over two years ago I photographed Darren Goldsmith between performances of Northern Ballet's Beauty and the Beast at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury. Today, after 21 years with the company, Darren will take to the stage with Northern Ballet for the last time. He's dancing Hook in their fantastic production of Peter Pan at the Grand Theatre in Leeds. I wish I was there, I love Hook, there's a wig and a frock coat and something brilliantly arrogant, or arrogantly brilliant.

I first saw Northern Ballet at the Marlowe when I was 13 years old (it was Romeo and Juliet!), our class at school was invited to see the warm-up in the afternoon and I was instantly a fan. So I've watched Darren dance for all of those 21 years and his retirement will leave some very big shoes to fill, it has always been a delight to watch him perform. There's too many fabulous performances to list, but Scrooge in A Christmas Carol is something that will always be ingrained on my memory. And crawling down the back wall of the old Marlowe, the first time i saw him as Dracula. Oh and Tybalt and wearing a fabulous coat in The Nutcracker and being viscous and brilliant and vile in Hamlet.... but mainly Scrooge........ ......... and Dracula!!

He's also a really decent guy who's about as obsessed with cameras as I am, knows a stack about a lot of things and it's really nice to chat whenever our paths cross. 😀

This is a crop of one of the shots I abandoned from that shoot, looking back it's the shot I wanted to take, it's the framing I should have made in camera. I like the directness of his expression and the beginning of an almost-smile.

As they say, hindsight's a wonderful thing, or a bitch, depending on how you look at it!! ;-)

So what do you say, to someone who's just been getting on with doing the thing they do?

Maybe just this...

Thank you. Watching you dance has been a blast.
